Vancouver City Green Agenda - Tuesday, December 15 2009
Chicago has more green roofs than any city in North America. The city also planted 500,000 trees to help counteract air pollution created by cars, and built 150 miles of bike paths. Chicago generates some of its own power requirements and buys a fifth of its electricity from renewable sources. Noble initiatives, but the city is also contending with a 90% freefall in building permits this year. In September, the Chicago Reader published this critique on Chicago’s efforts, led by Johnston: “The city has embarked on aggressive tree planting, installed a green roof atop city hall, and mapped out an ambitious plan to slash greenhouse gas emissions, but failed to ensure basic recycling services, force dirty power plants to clean up, or confront the city’s traffic and transit problems.” Rumor has it Johnston prefers sticks over carrots, an approach that won’t go down well here. To be fair we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and see what enterprising plans he has for Lotusland-by-the-Sea.
