BC Hydro advisory - new requirements for 400A 120/240V metering services - Friday, December 11 2009

Residential Connections

If you require electrical service for a single family home, duplex or mobile home requiring 200 amps or less – 100 amps is the typical standard in most homes – BC Hydro offers the services detailed below.

New connections, upgrades and alterations

Building a new home? BC Hydro can provide you with a new electrical connection, we can also provide temporary service during the construction phase.
Want to alter or upgrade your existing electrical service from 100 amps to 200 amps, or relocate existing service wires or meters?

If your connection meets the following criteria it will probably be a simple connection:

  • 120/240 volts
  • 200 amps or less
  • Maximum service length from a Hydro pole to the customer's point of attachment is 30 metres
  • Above or below ground connections

Requests for more complicated connections (for example, an extension or modification to BC Hydro's electrical system) will be reviewed by the BC Hydro design team who will advise you of charges and the time required to complete your connection.

Removals

Demolishing your home? Need your electrical service permanently removed? BC Hydro can remove existing service wires and meters and terminate service to your house.

Disconnects

Need a short term disconnect (less than 24 hours) to carry out maintenance on your property? For example, do you need to trim trees near a wire or replace a fascia board? Longer term disconnects can also be requested (for example, for wiring alterations or safety reasons).
