Housing starts are expected to rebound in the second half of 2009 and will reach 141,900 for the year. Starts will increase to 150,300 for 2010, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s (CMHC) third quarter Housing Market Outlook, Canada Edition* report. The overall forecast totals for housing starts remain unchanged from the second quarter release.

Minister Hansen stated that the objective is to protect critical public services, promote new investment and growth in our economy and move forward with long term initiatives that will improve the quality of life for all British Columbians.

An astounding rebound in the resale housing market and good news out of the manufacturing sector combined Friday to give yet another indication that Canada is slowly but surely digging itself out of recession. The Canadian Real Estate Association reported that 50,270 homes traded hands on the Multiple Listing Service in July. This is up 18.2 per cent from a year ago and set a record for the month of July.

As we now know, and as we suspected a couple of months ago, the B.C. provincial government announced yesterday it plans to harmonize its provincial sales tax with the federal goods and services tax, effective July 1, 2010. Both governments earlier this week signed a memorandum of understanding on tax harmonization (HST).
